It may perhaps be objected that if a China Company 39
wishes to secure this advantage, it is open to it to wind
up and reincorporate itself as an English Company, wi tka
power to keep a local register in China or elsewhere.
The difficulty in the way of this is that many of the
shareholdere of China Companies are Chinese and other
nationals, na woll
ns well as Britishsubjects residing in China,
who like to be able to essert their rights in the control
of the conduct of the coup mies in which their money is
invested, in a way which they could not do if the register
-ed office were removed to ani nd, and moreover, although
they would be resident in Chins, and the capital put b
and the business of the Company conducted either here or
in the Straits settlements, the dividends would be liable
to Fritish Income Tax.
